Learn about the Niko Sierra Athletic Scholarship Fund
LONGMEADOW, Mass. — The Niko Sierra Athletic Scholarship Fund was launched in 2021 after the sudden passing of Longmeadow resident Nikolas “Niko” Sierra. Niko was an amazing athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and lacrosse. Niko was kind, a hard worker who always gave 100%. He received several individual and team achievements including many Western Mass Championships, a Lacrosse State Title, Super 7 in all three of his sports, and LHS Outstanding Male Athlete in 2009. Niko was awarded a scholarship to Sacred Heart University where continued his athletic career playing Division 1 football for the Pioneers. After graduating college, Niko continued to play football. Niko played at the professional level in the arena leagues. Niko played for the Cedar Rapids Titans, the Nebraska Danger, and the Maine Mammoths.
“Niko was well loved in our community and he loved Longmeadow. Niko was kind and generous, the guy that would go out of his way to put a smile on your face.” said his mother, longtime Longmeadow resident, Betsy Sierra.
“This athletic scholarship not only benefits graduating seniors, awarding two character awards to students sharing and exhibiting the character traits that Niko possessed and held himself to, but any athlete just wanting to play. Longmeadow has some of the highest fees for sports participation in the area. I was a single parent and struggled to pay these fees at times. We want to help any family or young person be able to get out there and move their bodies, experience team sports and the good things that come from sports, regardless of their family circumstances,” said Betsy.
The Niko Sierra Athletic Scholarship Fund’s mission is to support families financially towards athletics and education. The vision is to successfully help families enroll their children in sports without worrying about financial troubles. Families can apply for the scholarship by filling out a form on their website or the high school athletics page – and others are also welcome to donate to this scholarship fund. The Niko Sierra Memorial Golf tournament is held each fall and is another great way to support the fund.
