Bringing the game to life: Desert Sports Live
FARMINGTON, N.M. — A remarkable broadcasting business is transforming the way we experience local school sports. Founded in 2008, Desert Sports Live has quickly become an essential platform for athletic events, connecting families and fans like never before.
A Passion Project Takes Flight
Albert Velarde, a veteran broadcaster, felt a compelling urge to create something special. “I was ready to break away from radio,” he explains. “Video and audio are where everything is headed.” Partnering with Stephen Parks and their supportive wives, Amber and Kristan, the team embarked on a mission to bring high-quality broadcasts of local sports to families around the world.
“We wanted to ensure that families could follow their loved ones’ games, no matter where they are,” Albert adds, highlighting the heart of their vision.
Growing Stronger Together
What began as a small operation has blossomed into a dedicated crew of 12 passionate individuals. With an increasing demand from schools eager for broadcasts, Desert Sports Live is now averaging 2,000 views a week. “We haven’t made a penny yet,” Albert admits, “but we’re actively seeking sponsors who recognize the value of supporting local sports.”
One standout moment occurred during a recent Aztec game, where viewers from Japan to the Netherlands tuned in. “People have reached out to say thank you. They wouldn’t have been able to watch their nephew’s games without us,” he reflects. This sense of connection fuels the team’s passion, allowing families to feel part of the action, no matter the distance.
Highlighting the Athletes
In addition to live broadcasts, Desert Sports Live features a segment called “Hot Mic,” spotlighting local athletes and sharing their stories. From the quarterbacks of the Bloomfield and Aztec football teams to captains of volleyball and soccer squads, the team strives to give these young stars a voice. “It’s important for us to rally the community behind these kids,” Albert emphasizes.
A Commitment to the Future
Desert Sports Live’s commitment extends beyond broadcasting. The team collaborates with high school students through programs like Panther Vision and FHS Live, offering internships to help prepare them for careers in media. “We want to help them elevate their dreams,” Kristan shares, acknowledging the talented production team, including C.R. Bainter, Cory Kitchens, and 15-year-old Genero Lopez.
Looking Ahead
As Desert Sports Live continues to grow, its mission remains clear: to foster community spirit and support local athletes. With 3-4 games broadcast each week—from wrestling to baseball—the team is excited about the future. “We are grateful for the community’s support,” Albert concludes.
Desert Sports Live is more than just a sports broadcasting service; it’s about creating lasting connections and memories. Whether at the game or watching from afar, this dedicated team ensures every moment is captured and celebrated.
