Cade McNamara transferring: 5 possible landing spots

IOWA CITY, Iowa (BVM) – Cade McNamara has entered the transfer portal following two seasons at Iowa. McNamara will go into the portal as a grad transfer and needs an eligibility waiver from the NCAA to return for a seventh season.

“I’m looking forward to this offseason, being the healthiest I’ve been in years, and continuing my growth as a player, person, and leader,” McNamara said in an Instagram post announcing his intention to transfer. “I’m excited to see where God takes my football journey next.”

The 24-year-old quarterback was a highly-touted four-star recruit in the Class of 2019 who spent his first four seasons of college football at Michigan. McNamara threw for over 2,500 yards and led the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff in 2021, but he was replaced by J.J. McCarthy the following season while also suffering a knee injury.

McNamara transferred to Iowa ahead of the 2023 season, but injuries marred his time in Iowa City as well. Last season, McNamara played in just five games before tearing his ACL, while he also missed the final month of the 2024 regular season due to a concussion. Overall, McNamara threw for 1,522 yards and 10 touchdowns across two years with the Hawkeyes.

Despite his recent struggles to stay healthy, McNamara could still be a hot commodity in the transfer portal with proven talent and valuable experience. Here are five landing spots for the 24-year-old signal caller.
