Philip Simmons High School XC teams dominate state championships
CHARLESTON, S.C. — On November 22, 2024, at The Farm at Newberry College, both the girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams clinched the Class AA state titles, marking a historic achievement for the school.

The girls’ team set the stage with a commanding performance. Junior Avah Mallek defended her individual State Championship, leading the team to a decisive victory. Joining her on the All-State roster were Flynn Taylor (8th), Laura Perry (11th), and Lilah May (12th). Anna Alomar rounded out the team’s scoring, finishing just outside the All-State list in 16th place. This victory secured the girls’ third consecutive state title, and with all of their top eight runners returning in 2025, they’re already setting their sights on next season.

The boys’ team, not to be out done by the girls, followed up their performance with a very impressive race. Senior Captain, Joey Wright, raced one of the best races of his career en route to a State Runner up finish. With excellent racing behind him, the boys were able to secure a narrow 3-point victory to claim the program’s first-ever State Championship.

All state finishers included: Pierce Walker (7th place), Mattew Perry (9th place), Brian Stambaugh (10th place), Grady Castiglia (11th place), and Trent Manning (15th).

Coach Josh Michael credited the teams’ hard work, tight-knit bond, and relentless drive for this unforgettable success.
Congratulations to the Iron Horses on their incredible season and achievements!
