A new vision for Gettysburg Area Recreation Authority as Al Moyer takes the helm

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — After 36 years in public education and a distinguished career that includes serving as a school superintendent and college professor, Al Moyer is bringing his wealth of experience and community-minded vision to the Gettysburg Area Recreation Authority (GARA) as its new director.

“I view GARA as a community treasure that provides something for everyone,” says Al, whose enthusiasm for the 52-acre facility is evident as he describes its diverse offerings. From ball fields and farmers markets to playgrounds and walking paths, the recreation complex serves as a vital hub for community activity.

Al’s connection to GARA is personal. His own children and grandchildren have participated in youth sports programs at the facility, and he’s witnessed firsthand the impact of having such a comprehensive recreational space in the community. “My best memories are watching my grandkids on the baseball field and on the playgrounds here,” he shares. “I absolutely love seeing them have a great time here rather than in front of video or television screens.”

As the only full-time staff member, Al acknowledges the challenges ahead but approaches them with optimism and strategic thinking. He’s already initiated several key projects, including:

  • Developing a comprehensive capital improvement plan
  • Forming a “Friends of GARA” community committee for fundraising and volunteer support
  • Negotiating new initiatives with youth sports programs
  • Exploring expanded partnerships with local municipalities and organizations

“We have equipment and facilities that need to be upgraded,” Al explains, pointing to specific opportunities like revitalizing an underutilized batting cage. “It just takes the will, manpower, and a little financial support.”

Drawing on his experience as a regional commissioner for AYSO soccer and his involvement in various community leadership roles, Al sees tremendous potential in expanding GARA’s partnerships. While acknowledging the crucial support from Gettysburg Borough and Cumberland Township, he envisions broader participation from surrounding municipalities whose residents regularly use the facility.

Safety and security are also high on his agenda. He’s already working with local law enforcement to increase their presence in the park and is exploring the addition of security cameras and improved lighting in select areas.

For Al, success at GARA isn’t just about maintaining facilities—it’s about creating opportunities for community engagement and active lifestyles. “I love enjoying the walking/bike path and observing people of all ages also enjoying the park,” he says. Looking ahead, the GARA board of directors, along with Al, hope to expand programs, potentially including soccer and other sports, while ensuring the park continues to serve as a vibrant community resource.

With his background in education leadership and deep community ties, Al brings both experience and passion to his new role. As he works alongside GARA’s dedicated board of directors, their vision for this “community treasure” promises to enhance recreational opportunities for residents of all ages in the greater Gettysburg area.
