Makhi Hughes transferring: 5 possible landing spots for RB

Houston might not immediately stand out as a top destination for one of the best running backs in the transfer portal, but the Cougars could be in play to land Hughes. That’s because of Willie Fritz who was the head coach at Tulane as Hughes began his collegiate career. Former Tulane running backs coach Derrick Sherman is also on Fritz’s staff in Houston, as is former Green Wave interim coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Slade Nagle. The familiarity with the coaching staff could be intriguing for Hughes and Houston offers him a chance to compete at the Power 4 level. The Cougars went just 4-8 in 2024, but brighter days might be ahead with some key offseason additions, including quarterback Conner Weigman. Hughes would be another big addition for Fritz and could help the Cougars quickly ascend in the Big 12.
