GlenOak wrestling team: “Find a way to win”

CANTON, Ohio — At GlenOak High School, wrestling isn’t just a sport; it’s a family, a tradition, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Head Coach Michael Hynd has been leading the charge alongside assistant coaches Adam Black, Lucas Krumlauf, Nikolas Kiley, and Danielle Bergert, cultivating a culture that’s driven the Golden Eagles to unprecedented success. With a rallying cry of “Find a Way to Win,” the team embodies resilience, grit, and unity.

The GlenOak Golden Eagles wrestling team has been a force to reckon with over the past six years, consistently achieving winning records and earning state placements for four consecutive seasons. This year, they’re grappling with a new level of ambition: becoming federal champions and sending every wrestler to the state tournament. With a roster that boasts 58 boys and 10 girls—the largest in the program’s history—Coach Hynd believes the team is primed for greatness.

Kicking off the season with strong performances, the Golden Eagles recently placed third at The Ashton Hynd Memorial Tournament and emerged as champions at the Riverside Rumble. Although their current record officially stands at 0-0, the groundwork has been laid for a year to remember.

Leadership plays a pivotal role in GlenOak’s success, and this year’s captains—Ethan Leu, Anthony Jeffries, Joseph Altieri, Xavier Jackson, Ghalaries Alkied, and Zachary Alexander—are setting the tone.

Beyond their prowess on the mat, these athletes have earned respect for their unwavering commitment to the team’s goals and their ability to inspire their peers. Whether it’s through hard work at practice or stepping up during critical matches, these leaders epitomize the team-first mentality.

One of the team’s most electric moments comes courtesy of captain Ethan Leu, whose passion and experience have made him GlenOak’s unofficial “hype man.” Having competed at the state tournament, Ethan knows what it takes to wrestle at the highest level. Before matches, he rallies the team, ensuring that every wrestler is ready to give their all. His influence isn’t just felt in the locker room; it’s evident in the records he’s setting. Ethan holds the fastest pin in team history at just six seconds—a feat that’s as awe-inspiring as it is motivating.

Not to be outdone, teammate Zachary Alexander has broken the season escape record, showcasing the team’s technical skills and tenacity. For GlenOak, these individual achievements reflect the collective hard work and determination that define their season.

While the Golden Eagles have their eyes set on championship titles, the journey is just as important as the destination. New members are welcomed with open arms, earning respect through their commitment to practice and the rigorous demands of the sport. And when the grind of the season calls for a break, the team bonds over meals, with Jimmy John’s subs fueling them before matches and celebratory dinners bringing them together afterward.

When asked what keeps this team motivated, Coach Hynd credits the sheer determination and time each wrestler dedicates to their craft. The long practices, grueling drills, and mental focus are all part of the Golden Eagles’ relentless pursuit of success.

In the words of their coach, it all comes back to family. “Find a Way to Win” isn’t just a slogan; it’s a way of life for the GlenOak wrestling team. With a culture built on trust, hard work, and camaraderie, this season promises to add another remarkable chapter to the storied history of the Golden Eagles.
