El Dorado flag football player Karina Bier breaks barriers

PLACENTIA, Calif. — Seventeen-year-old Karina Bier is no stranger to challenges, achievements, and dreams that break barriers. As a standout flag football and lacrosse player at El Dorado High School, Karina recently had the extraordinary opportunity to showcase her talents under the bright lights at SoFi Stadium. She represented her school and her sport in the Chargers High School CIF All-Star Game, a moment she describes as the highlight of her athletic career.

From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition

Karina has played flag football for eight years, a passion sparked at age nine. While she initially saw sports as a way to stay active, her dedication has transformed her into a multi-sport athlete excelling in lacrosse, Taekwondo, and flag football. Despite juggling these commitments, her heart remains devoted to flag football, a sport she hopes to see on the Olympic stage in 2028.

Karina’s impressive skills earned her a coveted spot in the Chargers All-Star CIF game at SoFi Stadium, where she competed among the best high school players in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. “The best part wasn’t just playing in the iconic stadium but meeting other girls who share the same love for flag football,” Karina says. “It’s incredible to see how far the sport has come and to play alongside talented athletes who are helping it grow.”

On January 2nd, Karina earned an all-expenses paid trip to Orlando, Florida to play for the first-ever Under Armour Next All America Girls Flag Football Game. Only 24 girls nationwide were invited to play at this inaugural event. Karina also scored tons of free Under Armour gear. She is currently ranked 10th in the nation for tackles for the 2024 high school flag football season.

Resilience Through Adversity

The journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Karina faced a series of injuries during her senior season, from a broken finger to a knee injury and even a broken nose. Each setback tested her resolve, but she emerged stronger every time. “Injuries taught me to dig deep and stay motivated,” she shares. “With the support of my family, friends, and teammates, I’ve learned that every day is a new opportunity to push through challenges.”

Her resilience paid off as she was named Team MVP, Scholar Athlete, and First Team All-League, among other accolades. These recognitions highlight her grit, determination, and love for the game.

Looking Ahead: Dreams of Collegiate and Olympic Glory

This summer, Karina plans to participate in the NFL Flag Championship in Ohio. The game will air on ESPN and Disney+. The NFL is investing heavily into girls flag football, making the future very promising for athletes like Karina.

As Karina prepares for her next chapter, she is actively considering opportunities to play flag football and lacrosse at the collegiate level. Washington State University, her dream school, holds a special place in her heart due to her family’s Cougars legacy. “If my future college doesn’t have a flag football program, I’m determined to start one,” she says with determination.

Her ultimate goal? Competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a member of the U.S. Women’s National Flag Football Team. Until then, she plans to continue her dual-sport career, inspiring younger athletes and advocating for the sport she loves.

A Leader On and Off the Field

Beyond athletics, Karina is an active member of El Dorado’s Digital Media Arts Academy and is passionate about sports broadcasting. Whether filming football games on the sidelines or connecting with teammates, her commitment to excellence shines through.

For Karina, flag football is more than just a game—it’s a community and a platform for empowerment. “I’ve been waiting for flag football to become a mainstream sport, and it’s amazing to see its growth,” she says. “Being part of this movement is an honor, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.”

As Karina prepares to represent her club team, Conquer SoCal, at the National Flag Football Championship this summer, her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with determination, hard work, and an unwavering passion for the game.
