Top 5 Notre Dame defensive coordinator candidates for 2025

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (BVM) – Notre Dame will be looking to hire a new defensive coordinator in the coming days as Al Golden has left South Bend to become an NFL defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Golden, 55, is a longtime college assistant who also served as a head coach at Temple and Miami. He also previously spent time in the NFL as an assistant with the Detroit Lions and as linebackers coach with the Bengals from 2020-21.

Golden became Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator following his first stint in Cincinnati and has led an impressive unit alongside Marcus Freeman over the past few years. In 2024, Notre Dame gave up just 14.3 points per game – the second-best mark in the nation – and ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed per game (298.3).

Now, Freeman will look to find a new defensive boss and should have a nice mix of options to choose from between in-house candidates and potential external hires. Here are five candidates to become Notre Dame’s next defensive coordinator.
