Centerville serves up new middle school sports option
DAYTON, Ohio — My son, a Watts Middle School student, has enjoyed volleyball for the past four years: two with the Centerville girls’ program, followed by two with Flight Academy Volleyball Club. The one thing missing has been an opportunity for him to play on a middle school team.
Earlier this year my friend and Boys’ Volleyball Parent Coordinator Rob Beeler introduced me to Troy Brewer, head coach of Centerville High School (CHS) boys’ volleyball. Throughout the course of our conversation, I discovered that Troy has been eager to start a middle school volleyball program; he just needs about 10 more hours in the day, to take it on himself. Having served as assistant coach for Flight Academy for the past two years, I volunteered to coach a startup program for Troy.

Tryouts are slated to begin this month, with our inaugural season running through the end of Apr. Boys from throughout Centerville City Schools are encouraged to participate. We are planning to form at least one team to represent the district. If we end up with enough players for a 6th/7th grade team and an 8th grade team, we’ll be ecstatic! We would love to face the challenge of needing to field enough coaches for multiple middle school teams.
Volleyball is an ideal option for anyone who is looking for a spring sport to play or who wants to give it a try. This program—which will involve a couple practices and at least one local game per week—will have the dual goal of growing player interest in the sport of volleyball and strengthening the CHS boys’ volleyball team. By the time these boys enter high school, they will have developed the skills and knowledge to make the CHS program even more competitive than it already is.
Practices will take place at Centerville school gyms, with matches to be held against other GWOC (Greater Western Ohio Conference) and local middle school teams.
We invite any and all interested boys to attend tryouts. For more information, check ParentSquare for the student interest form or email [email protected].
