Darian DeVries to Indiana: 5 WVU basketball head coach candidates

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (BVM) – The West Virginia Mountaineers are again in the market for a new men’s basketball head coach.

Last offseason, the Mountaineers aimed to replace interim head coach Josh Eilert who filled in after Bob Huggins’ resignation. They did so by hiring Darian DeVries, an up-and-coming head coach who had found success at Drake.

In his first year in Morgantown, DeVries led West Virginia to a 19-13 record and a seventh-place finish in the Big 12. Many thought WVU’s resume was good enough to reach the NCAA Tournament, but the Mountaineers ended up being the first team left out of the bracket.

With West Virginia’s season coming to a close earlier than expected, the Indiana Hoosiers, who were also seeking a head coach with Mike Woodson stepping down, pursued DeVries and officially hired him on Tuesday.

His departure has West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker looking for a new coach yet again, as the Mountaineers will now have four different head coaches in four straight seasons. Here’s a look at five candidates to become the next head coach of the Mountaineers.
