LSU commit Omar Serna enjoying ‘every moment’ as MLB draft nears
HOUSTON (BVM) – When Omar Serna began playing baseball at 4 years old, it didn’t seem like the sport would be a big part of his future. In fact, Serna’s mom often had to force him to go to practice.
“My mom wanted me to try different stuff,” Serna said. “I didn’t like baseball when I was younger.”
However, Serna quickly developed a passion for the sport as time wore on.
“I carried on, I ended up loving it and I’ve been playing it ever since,” Serna said.
Many years later, Serna has emerged as one of the top Class of 2025 prospects in Texas, and one of the most talented high school baseball players in the entire country. He will likely be selected in the 2025 MLB Draft this summer, a position he has worked hard to put himself in.

“It’s amazing,” Serna said. “I thank God and my family for everything they’ve done for me to be able to get to this point.”
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior catcher has molded his game similarly to former St. Louis Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, with a strong bat, a good arm and blocking ability behind the plate.
Serna’s talent was evident early on, as many began taking notice of him around 8 or 9 years old. By the time he was a high school freshman, Serna had already committed to college baseball powerhouse, LSU.
Being committed that early surprised some as he began his prep career at Dobie High School, but Serna proved his talent time and again both for the Longhorns and during the travel season with Wow Factor. As just a freshman, Serna hit .431 with multiple home runs.
“I’ve definitely grown over the years and it’s flown by real quick,” Serna said.

Serna continued to impress as a sophomore, hitting .385 with four home runs and 30 RBIs. Ahead of his junior year, Serna transferred to Lutheran South Academy, a transition that allowed his game to flourish further.
“Making that transition, it really made me more comfortable and motivated,” Serna said. “A lot of the kids at LSA, they want to win, they want to get better and they want to play in college. It’s a different environment and it only pushes me harder.”
Serna and the Pioneers made a run to the second round of the playoffs in his junior season as the catcher hit .465 with eight home runs, 35 RBIs and a .851 slugging percentage. Now, he hopes his team will make an even deeper run this spring.
“My biggest goal this year is to win a state championship,” Serna said. “It’s been a big goal for me and the team, and we’re doing everything in our power to win every game and play at our best ability.”

Even though the senior has only been at Lutheran South Academy for two years, he is hoping to leave an impactful legacy behind.
“The legacy that I want to leave is being that player who worked hard and always did what it took to get the job done,” Serna said. “Just making sure that everybody is in line and playing their heart out, whether we’re beating a team 10-0, or down 10-0, still having the same heart and dedication to go out there and play our best.”
Serna’s passion and dedication are on display anytime he steps foot on the diamond. That, along with his exceptional talent, shined through at various showcases this past summer, most notably the Area Code Games and the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

“It was an amazing opportunity to be able to go out to those events,” Serna said. “You learn a lot. You have coaches and scouts in your dugout and are able to pick their brains and ask them what they see … Those events are the most fun things you can do.”
Serna has also earned the opportunity to compete with USA Baseball in recent years. The experiences have not only helped improve his game but also allowed him to develop relationships with other top players in the nation.
“I’ve been blessed to have a lot of great friendships with a lot of great players,” Serna said. “I feel like it’s helped me a lot, just seeing how other people see the game from a different perspective.”
Whether the next step of Serna’s journey takes him to the collegiate or professional level, he is focused on living in the moment and embracing whatever happens next.

“I’m trying to enjoy every moment that I have left with my boys the rest of my senior year,” Serna said. “I’m just trying to enjoy my family time and embrace everything that’s left.
“I’m leaving it in God’s hands … I can’t control any of it other than playing to the best of my ability.”
Should Serna play at LSU, he will join a program with a rich history. The Tigers’ success has continued recently under Jay Johnson, with the team less than two years removed from winning a national championship.
“It’s awesome,” Serna said. “Some of my friends I’ve known for a while are playing there. Just seeing them come in and do what they’re doing now, it’s really impressive and it makes me really excited. I’m glad to be a part of the family. I’m proud to be called a Tiger.”

Serna knew LSU would be in his future from a young age. In 2017, Serna and his family attended a New Orleans Saints preseason game. They stopped to visit LSU’s campus on the way there, immediately intriguing Serna.
“I told my mom, this is where I want to go to college, this is where I want to play baseball,” Serna said. “Ever since that day, it was my dream to go there. Having the opportunity to be able to sign there and commit that early, it was a blessing. I only had my eyes on LSU … The coaching and what they’ve done with the program is really impressive. It only makes me more excited to go there.”
Should he play in Baton Rouge, continuing the rich history and success of LSU baseball is at the forefront for the Lutheran South Academy senior.
“Improving as a player, as a person and obviously winning national championships,” Serna said about his goals at LSU. “Just have fun and do the most that I can to get better.”
Ultimately, Serna hopes his playing journey culminates in the big leagues. It’s something he’s dreamed of for quite a while, and he feels ready to seize the moment.
“Everybody’s dream is to make it to MLB and it’s obviously my dream,” Serna said. “I’m hoping I become a Hall of Famer one day.
“It’s just the start … Everything that it’s taken to get here has been a lot. I’m still young and there’s a lot to go. It’s going to take a lot of work. I’m ready for it, I love this game and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
