Dayton’s Journey League: Special people helping people
BELLBROOK, Ohio — There’s no doubt about it: For many people Journey League is a game changer! The Dayton chapter is in its third season this year, using basketball to enhance the physical and social well-being of kids, teens and young adults with disabilities and special needs.
“I was looking for ways to get my daughter Lilly involved in some physical activities that would not only get her up and moving, but would also help her socialize and make friends,” Bellbrook resident Molly DeWeese said. “Little did I know how Journey League would change our lives. We have found the fellowship we have so longed for.”
At its core Journey League prides itself on being a unifying, safe and inclusive place to play basketball, exercise and make lasting friendships. Standing for acceptance, teamwork, skill development and fun, it celebrates diversity, sportsmanship, and the opportunity to be a beacon of hope and humanity for all.
The program is run by a small group of volunteers called The Village, who have worked multiple years to get the league up and running. These Go Givers are genuinely special people, dedicating their lives to helping others. “This program has exceeded our expectations,” said Nick Davis, director and Village member. “With about 100 registered athletes, we have built an amazing community. Every Sat. Henley Hall [located in Beavercreek] is filled with smiles, hard work and an energy that is unexplainable. We are truly blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of something so special.”
Recently some of the league’s older athletes have also had the opportunity to take the court at halftime, during both Wright State University and University of Dayton basketball games.
“I have started coaching, and Lilly comes and helps with both sessions,” Molly continued. “As a special needs parent, finding a place where your child belongs is priceless. It has become a family affair for us. My once nonverbal child has started asking, ‘Mom, basketball?’ and ‘See friends?’ My heart is full, and I am forever grateful for the friendships forged both on and off the court.”
