Quincy Wilson teases Florida Gators as pro status looms

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (BVM) – Quincy Wilson is igniting speculation about his future in track and field after his official visit to the University of Florida.

The 17-year-old sprinting phenom stirred up some buzz with a cryptic Instagram post: “Go Gators?” while dressed in Florida’s signature orange and blue.

But the question looms: Will he turn pro or take the college route?

Will Quincy Wilson go pro or run college track?

Wilson is undeniably the most coveted recruit in track and field, having made history as the youngest American male track athlete to compete in the Olympics. He’s made it clear that while he intends to finish high school, his decision about running at the college level remains up in the air.

As of now, Wilson has not signed a professional contract. When asked on the “Beyond The Records Podcast” on what’s keeping him in high school, he responded with, “My schoolwork. I’m an A-average student, and my parents are not going to let me go out there like that… That’s facts, I’m finishing high school.”

Wilson agreed that he’s not so caught up in going pro, and he’s leaving his options open depending on his improvement.

“I got two more years of high school (left),” Wilson said on the “Beyond The Records Podcast” in February. I’m going to just let it plan out. We (have) to see how these two years go, you never know if I run 43 (seconds) in the [400-meter dash], you never know.”

Despite the pressure of being an elite athlete, Wilson expressed that he’s looking forward to the downtime college life could offer. Currently, his schedule is packed: he wakes up at 4:45 a.m. to catch the 6:15 a.m. bus for the 1.5-hour ride to school, followed by classes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., practice from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and finally he takes the bus back home so he can complete his homework and treatment.

However, Wilson’s decision on whether to attend college will be heavily influenced by NIL opportunities. In addition to his visit to Florida, Wilson has visited several other schools with massive NIL programs, including Tennessee, Georgia and Texas A&M

While Florida’s track program remains a possibility, Wilson is focused on how his high school career unfolds before making a final decision. Many recall that Olympian Noah Lyles initially committed to Florida, but later decommitted to focus on his pro career instead.
