GlenOak senior Anna McClure aims to inspire through cheerleading

CANTON, Ohio — 17-year-old Anna McClure keeps her spirits high by diving into the world of cheerleading at GlenOak High. In her senior year, she plans on taking her sport to the next level and hopes to one day give back to GlenOak by coaching the sport herself. “My dream is to coach cheerleading, hopefully with Plain Local!” she excitedly shares.

“I strive to improve my technique and become as well-rounded as possible, but my main goal is to inspire the youth and become a role model for others who want to support their teams,” Anna shares.

Like any athlete, Anna has faced challenges. For her, mental blocks have been the toughest.

“It honestly forms from a lack of confidence in my ability, so even though I know I can physically do something, my mind tells me I can’t. I manage it by staying consistent and practicing every day.”

Support from loved ones has played a big role in Anna’s journey, especially her mother’s advice: “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.” Following this advice has opened doors for her both in her sport and in her life.

Anna thrives on both the sideline and competitive aspects of cheerleading.

“I love supporting teams, jumping around, and motivating players while having fun with my best friends,” she says. “Competitively, I love working as a team and growing together.”

Before performing, Anna follows rituals that help her stay focused.

“I’m usually one of the last to step on the mat. I also always pray before competing, and as a team, we do a chant.”

Outside of cheer, Anna keeps busy.

“I love spending time with family and friends, going to concerts, shopping, volunteer coaching, babysitting, playing pickleball, and I recently started a job as a server that I love.”

Being part of a team has taught her accountability and dedication.

“You have to hold yourself accountable, have self-discipline, and give 100% effort because others are counting on you.”

She takes to heart her coach’s advice: “Keep smiling and have fun, even if you make a mistake. You’re there to do what you love.”

Mistakes happen, but Anna knows bouncing back is what matters.

“At a competition, I made a mistake during my dance, even though I had done it for months. The next day, I corrected it and performed just fine. No matter how long you’ve been doing something, mistakes happen. What matters is holding yourself accountable.”

With her passion and determination, Anna McClure is leaving a lasting impact on GlenOak Cheerleading. Whether on the sidelines, on the mat, or in her future as a coach, she is sure to continue inspiring others with her dedication and spirit.
