CHARLETSON, S.C. — Congratulations to the Philip Simmons Cross County program! Both men’s and women’s teams brought home state championships again this November! We are so proud of you!
Coach(es) name(s):
Head Coach: Josh Michael
Assistant Coaches: Emma McCauley and Michele Santor
Please share some history or backstory on the team/club/program.
The 2025 season marked the ninth year of Philip Simmons High School and the seventh under Head Coach Josh Michael. In that short time, the Iron Horse Cross Country program has grown into one of the most competitive in South Carolina. The boys entered the year as defending State Champions, while the girls were chasing a fourth straight State Title. Beyond championships, the program is built on strong relationships and community; this year nearly 75 athletes, almost 10% of the school, chose to be part of the team.

What are the team’s goals for the current/upcoming season?
Both squads entered the season with one clear, ambitious goal: defend their State Championships.
Who are the team’s captains or leaders? What makes them a vital part of the team’s success?
This year’s leadership came from a standout group of seniors: All-State performers Trent Manning, Brian Stambaugh, Keziah Varner, and three-time defending State Champion Avah Mallek. Their consistency, work ethic, and daily commitment set the tone for the entire program. In a sport where self-discipline is everything, their example was invaluable.
Does the team have any pregame rituals or traditions?
We love to share a team meal prior to our larger meets. These are a great time for athletes and their families to get to know each other outside of their running!

How does the team welcome new members?
The program operates very much like an extended family. Current athletes embrace newcomers quickly, helping each athlete find their place, their people, and their role within the team’s warm and supportive environment.
How does the team celebrate?
Celebrations often happen together—sometimes at a restaurant after a big race, other times right on the bus ride home to Charleston. What matters most is sharing the moment as a team.
Has the team (or any individuals) broken any records this year? (for example: single game/season statistics like scoring or wins in a season, first to the state, etc.)
The program compiled a remarkable combined regular-season record of 416–22, winning 7 of the 12 invitationals they attended.
Laura Perry captured her fourth straight Region Championship, while Avah Mallek secured her third consecutive State Title.
All-State Honorees:
Girls:
Avah Mallek – State Champion
Laura Perry – 4th
Flynn Taylor – 10th
Keziah Varner – 12th
Stella Wininger – 15th
Boys:
Matthew Perry – 4th
Trent Manning – 5th
Grady Castiglia – 7th
Brian Stambaugh – 9th
Griffin Tollison – 12th
What has motivated the team to reach their goals this season?
The pursuit of back-to-back State Championships drove both teams all season. Many athletes were also inspired by the desire to honor the legacy of those who came before them. For the girls who raced at the State Meet, none of whom have ever lost a championship. The motivation to maintain that streak was especially strong. Still, their true drive came from within. Embracing the team motto, “Excellence in Everything,” the athletes showed an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way every single day.
