Shamrocks in action: The heart of Westfield HS wrestling

WESTFIELD, Ind. —

Head Coach: Tom Griffin

Assistant Coaches: Terry O’Neill, John Floor, Tevin Beyers, Lou Silverman, Jared Snow, Joe Januszkiewicz

We sat down with Tom Griffin, Head Coach of the Westfield High School Wrestling Team, to hear about his experience, the program, and what makes WHS Wrestling so special.

What has your experience been like coaching wrestling at Westfield?

“It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” Griffin says. “Wrestling teaches accountability, resilience, and discipline in ways few sports can. Being trusted to guide young people through that process is incredibly meaningful. What makes it really special is seeing athletes grow not just as competitors, but as people, learning to overcome adversity, take pride in their effort, and support each other. Helping shape confidence and character is something I never take for granted.”

How would you describe the WHS wrestling program?

“Our program is consistently recognized as a top-15 program in Indiana, and that comes from believing in the process and focusing on continuous improvement,” he explains. “We emphasize daily commitment, discipline, and personal accountability. Our wrestlers learn to control what they can, effort, attitude, preparation—and when they show up ready to work, success follows both on and off the mat.”

What are some highlights from this season so far?

Griffin beams when he talks about the season. “Advancing to Team State, winning the Shamrock Duals, and having an athlete win the Ironman—those are the big moments, but each of them reflects the daily effort and commitment of the team.”

Are there any student-athletes you’d like to spotlight?

“One athlete that really stands out is Connor Maddox,” he says. “He’s one of only two Indiana wrestlers ever to win the Ironman. That’s an incredible accomplishment and a reflection of his dedication.”

How has the team grown or improved this season?

“This year, we’ve focused on the small details,” Griffin says. “Every day, the team is getting better. The consistent attention to effort, discipline, and improvement has led to steady growth throughout the season.”

What does it mean to be part of Westfield’s wrestling team?

“Being a Shamrock wrestler means committing to a standard of excellence,” he explains. “It’s about accountability, relentless effort, and trusting the process. It’s supporting your teammates and taking pride in representing something bigger than yourself every time you step on the mat.”

What advice would you give to students who may be interested in WHS wrestling in the future?

Griffin encourages students to “just give it a try. Come in with an open mind and a strong work ethic. Wrestling teaches confidence, discipline, and resilience. If you’re willing to show up, work hard, and keep improving, you’ll gain skills and experiences that go far beyond the mat.”

How can the community support the team and help grow interest in wrestling across the district?

“The best way to help is to show up,” he says. “Come to matches, support youth and middle school programs, and encourage students to give wrestling a try. Sharing the positive impact wrestling has on confidence, discipline, and character helps grow interest district-wide.”
