Make it count: A spotlight on Westfield High School girls lacrosse
WESTFIELD, Ind. — To learn more about the Westfield High School Girls Lacrosse program, we asked Head Coach Kirk Reis to share more about the team, the culture they are building, and how the community can get involved.
Can you tell us about your coaching experience?
Kirk Reis: I’ve been coaching girls lacrosse for the past 11 years, including the last four as the head coach at Westfield High School. I also serve on the playoff committee for the Indiana Girls Lacrosse Association (INGLA).

Can you describe the WHS Girls Lacrosse program?
Reis: The WHS girls lacrosse program is a varsity sport with a roster of about 40 student-athletes supported by six coaches. Over the past three years, we have consistently ranked among the top 10 teams in Indiana.

What are some highlights from this season so far?
Reis: Our competitions are just getting underway this month. The team has been preparing through strength and conditioning work with Tavio and holding regular evening practices. The girls have also participated in mental strength training with Ben Carnes of Mental Training Plan. This training helps athletes build confidence and focus while playing lacrosse and provides tools that benefit them off the field.
What does it mean to be part of Westfield Lacrosse?
Reis: Our theme this season is “Make It Count.” We want every single thing we do on and off the field to count. Every rep, every pass, every play, every shot, and every encouraging word to one another matters.

Our coaches want being part of WHS lacrosse to be about more than just playing a sport. We want these girls to grow as individuals by building mental toughness, physical strength, communication skills, and leadership. Ultimately, we want them to become great people, teammates, and leaders while improving both on and off the field.
What advice would you give younger students who may be interested in lacrosse?
Reis: Our youth program through WYS is growing, and we would love to see more girls try the sport and join one of our youth teams in the spring. We also hold several free clinics throughout the winter. Keep an eye on our Instagram, @westfieldgirlslax, for details—we would love to see you there!

How can the community support the program?
Reis: Encourage friends to join a team in the spring or attend one of our free clinics. Families can also join a local club program, help spread the word by sharing our posts on social media, and come out to games to support the team and learn more about the sport. We’d also love to see lacrosse continue to grow and eventually be incorporated into the school curriculum.
