Buteau was selected in a vote conducted on GoGriffs.com. The other finalists were Henrique Dias (men's soccer), Jaxyn Mahoney (men's cross country/track) and Justin Relosky (men's lacrosse). A native of Montreal, Buteau garnered All-Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie Team distinction after appearing in 31 games and leading all Golden Griffins defenseman in scoring with 17 points on five goals and 12 assists.
