Bike Centerville: Pedaling Toward a Healthier, Connected Community

CENTERVILLE, Ohio — Bicycling is a fun and low-impact way to stay active—boosting heart health, strengthening muscles, and easing stress. It’s also good for our community, reducing traffic, saving parking space, and cutting emissions. Riding a bike invites us to slow down and notice details that we often miss in a car. Safe, modern infrastructure is more important than ever, as electric bikes and scooters become more popular.

Founded in 2015, Bike Centerville is a nonprofit bicycle advocacy group serving Centerville-Washington Township. As a local chapter of Bike Miami Valley, we work with regional partners to promote bicycling as a path to positive community change.

From late spring through mid-fall, we lead seasonal community rides in partnership with Centerville-Washington Park District. These rides help participants discover safe local routes, build road confidence, meet fellow cyclists, and enjoy the natural beauty of our neighborhoods.

We’re also actively engaged in local planning efforts. Bike Centerville is working with city officials, township leaders and area businesses, to improve the cycling experience. Projects underway include connecting Route 12 to Kettering’s Route 8, developing a new signed north-south route and expanding multi-use paths, such as the 1.5-mile stretch along Clyo Road from SR 725 past Dimco Way. Plans also call for widening the sidewalk from Centerville High School to Forest Field Park and adding more bike parking around town.

Our region is home to the largest connected paved trail system in the country, with over 375 miles across the Miami Valley. While off-road trails are the safest option, suburban and country roads can be safe too—when riders follow smart cycling habits. Always wear a helmet, keep your bike in good condition, and make sure it fits properly.

Our long-term goal is for Centerville-Washington Township to earn recognition as a Bicycle-Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. Given that Centerville has the oldest population in Ohio, we also support an Active Transportation Plan, to ensure that walking and biking are safe and accessible for seniors and people with disabilities.

Bike Centerville is creating a stronger, more connected community—one ride at a time. Learn more (including safety tips and videos) at bikecenterville.com, attend our monthly meetings, or follow us on Facebook and Instagram. We’d love to hear your ideas!
