Horace Mann eighth grader Joinaya Clemons finds confidence through competition

WAUSAU, Wis. — For Horace Mann Middle School eighth grader Joinaya Clemons, sports have become more than just games, they’ve become a place to grow, build confidence and create friendships that will last long after the final whistle.

Whether she’s competing on the softball field, volleyball court or basketball court, Joinaya embraces every opportunity to challenge herself while supporting the teammates around her.

Although she has played softball for just two years, the sport has quickly become one of her greatest passions.

“My goal is to be known for playing sports,” said Joinaya.

Like many athletes, Joinaya knows that confidence can sometimes be as important as physical ability. One of the biggest challenges she faces is believing in herself during difficult moments.

“My biggest challenge is keeping my confidence high,” said Joinaya. “I manage this by reminding myself that I’m doing my best.”

That positive mindset has been shaped by advice she’s received from coaches and mentors over the years. One lesson, in particular, has stayed with her.

“The best advice I received from a coach was to not let anyone determine my worth besides me,” said Joinaya.

She also carries with her another simple but powerful reminder: hard work always pays off.

“The best advice I was ever given is that hard work will always be rewarded,” said Joinaya.

What Joinaya enjoys most about athletics isn’t just the competition, it’s the people she gets to share the experience with.

“I love being part of a team and building relationships that I didn’t know were possible,” said Joinaya.

Before every game, Joinaya takes a few moments to mentally prepare herself. Rather than focusing on statistics or outcomes, she reminds herself to give maximum effort and to be someone her teammates can depend on.

“I make sure that I’m ready to work hard and help others when they need it,” said Joinaya.

Being part of several teams has also helped her develop important life skills that extend beyond sports.

“Being a member of a team has taught me how to deal with all different types of people and how to connect with them,” said Joinaya.

Of course, every athlete experiences setbacks. For Joinaya, striking out at the plate can be frustrating, but she’s learned not to let one moment define an entire game.

“When I strike out, I get really frustrated,” said Joinaya. “To fix that, I regroup and get ready for the next time I have to go up.”

That ability to reset and move forward has become one of her greatest strengths.

Away from athletics, Joinaya enjoys spending time with friends and working, balancing school, sports and her responsibilities with determination.
