American University wrestling has welcomed 11-year-old Raphael, known as Raph, as an official teammate through its partnership with Team IMPACT, a nonprofit that connects children with serious illnesses or disabilities to college sports teams. Raph will spend time with the Eagles throughout the season, building friendships and sharing in team life. The partnership also gives AU wrestlers a chance to put their values of support, empathy and leadership into practice.

By the Numbers
  • Raph is 11 years old and in fifth grade.
  • Sophomore Gavin Cohen, a 157-pound wrestler, will serve as one of Raph’s mentors.
Bottom Line

Raph is joining the Eagles as more than a guest: He’s part of the team, and the relationship is designed to benefit both him and the student-athletes.
