Main Story

Dave Giffard is retiring from college coaching after 17 seasons leading VCU men’s soccer. He said the decision grew from a desire to focus on youth soccer and families in his community. VCU credited Giffard with developing players on and off the field and will immediately begin a national search for his successor.

By the Numbers
  • 17 seasons at VCU; career record: 128-120-61.
  • 3 NCAA Tournament appearances and 2 Atlantic 10 regular-season titles.
  • 5 appearances in the A-10 Championship match.
  • 2019 MLS SuperDraft No. 2 pick Siad Haji was among the former Rams who went on to play professionally.
State of Play
  • Giffard told VCU before the season that it would be his last in college coaching.
  • A national search for the next head coach will begin immediately.
  • VCU says it expects the next coach to develop players and compete for A-10 titles and NCAA Tournament berths.
Bottom Line

Giffard leaves after a long tenure marked by winning, player development and professional success for former Rams. VCU’s next hire must sustain that development while keeping the program competitive in the A-10 and nationally.
