The Astros have hired Randy Flores as general manager, more than two months after parting ways with Dana Brown. Flores joins Houston after a decade in the Cardinals’ front office, bringing experience in scouting and player acquisition. His immediate priorities include hiring a manager and filling key coaching vacancies as the club looks to address significant roster questions.

By the Numbers
  • Houston finished the season 81-81.
  • The Astros won their eighth AL West title in 10 seasons.
  • Flores appeared in 350 major league games as a pitcher.
  • He spent eight seasons as the Cardinals’ assistant general manager.
Yes, But

Houston has a strong recent winning tradition, but its .500 finish and unresolved roster needs leave Flores with substantial work ahead.

State of Play
  • Joe Espada’s contract was not renewed after three seasons as manager.
  • The Astros also need to fill coaching vacancies, including bench coach.
  • Flores previously led scouting and player-acquisition work in St. Louis.
What's Next

Flores’ first major decisions will be selecting a manager and reshaping the coaching staff, followed by addressing Houston’s roster needs.

Bottom Line

Flores arrives with relevant front-office experience, but his early hires and roster decisions will help determine whether Houston can turn its winning history into renewed success.
