Hockaday has introduced Sports Performance, an early-morning PE course that combines progressive strength and conditioning with instruction on exercise technique. Led by the school’s strength and conditioning coaches, the class gives students a structured way to meet PE requirements, track athletic progress and build gym skills—while requiring recovery time and excluding students currently in a Hockaday interscholastic sport.

By the Numbers
  • 19 students are enrolled.
  • Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.
  • One trimester earns one PE credit; students need six credits to graduate.
Yes, But

The training can be tiring, especially for students who also practice with outside teams. The course is designed to balance intensity with recovery weeks, and students participating in Hockaday interscholastic sports may not enroll concurrently.

What's Next

Students will use periodic gym benchmarks to measure progress as training advances from endurance and stabilization to muscle growth, maximum strength and power. The course also aims to help students become more confident designing and performing workouts on their own.

Bottom Line

Sports Performance turns a PE requirement into coached athletic development—helping students build strength, learn safe technique and make better use of their time.
