Liberty North and Kearney football players earn All-Simone Team Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Thomas A. Simone Memorial Football Awards are presented annually to the most outstanding high school football players in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. The awards are presented in tribute to Tommy Simone, who tragically died in an automobile accident in 1983.

A vote of the high school football coaches and media members in the metropolitan area select the recipients of these prestigious awards. The awards are presented to the football players most representative of excellence on the playing field.

On Tuesday, December 6th, the Simone Awards were presented at Park Hill High School.

Junious “Buck” Buchanan Memorial Award – For outstanding Class 5-6 lineman/linebacker. This year’s winner was Melvin Laster of Liberty North. This is his second Buchanan Award.

Thomas A. Simone Memorial Award – For outstanding high school football player. A finalist this year was Sam Van Dyne of Liberty North– his second nomination.

Bobby Bell Award – For outstanding Class 1-4 outstanding defensive player. Carter Schmidt of Kearney was a nominee.

Frank Fontana Memorial Award – For outstanding Class 1-4 high school football player. Zach Grace of Kearney was a nominee.

In addition to the Simone Awards, an All-Simone Team is selected to represent the best high school players in the Kansas City Metro at every position. This year’s selections included two Liberty North players: Sam Van Dyne and Melvin Lester. And two Kearney players: Zach Grace and Carter Schmidt.
