Meet Ocean View baseball player Landon Runyan
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Besides beaches, what is the first thing you think of when you hear “California?” I think of sports. Our state is home to thousands of teams for a variety of sports at every level. Most notably, California is home to more Major League Baseball organizations than any other state in the country. But let’s scale down. Playing at Huntington Beach’s small, but mighty, Ocean View High School is superstar senior, Landon Runyan.
Runyan is an outfielder and left-handed pitcher who recently committed to continue his athletic and academic career at the University of California, San Diego. He will be playing Division I baseball in the Big West Conference, against schools like California State Universities, Long Beach and Fullerton. This commitment is his proudest accomplishment and will enable him to display the payoff for all of his hard work.
Runyan began playing baseball in Little League at a young age, but really began to prosper during his time in travel ball. In high school, he played all four years on OVHS’ Seahawks team. For many, one of the best parts about the school is its smaller student body (having only about 1,300 students). At Ocean View, Landon is one of the most outgoing on campus stating that what he’s appreciated most about the Seahawk Baseball program are the friends he made and the opportunity to play with them. He views all of his time with “the boys” as his favorite memories and enjoys being with them to “have fun experiences and play the game.”
Teammate and friend, fellow senior Evyn Lewis describes Landon as an “upbeat teammate on and off the field.” He continues, “Landon brings a positive energy every day and consistently livens up the team energy with his cheerful attitude. He is extremely dedicated to his craft, constantly putting in the extra time to be the best player and person he can be.”
The team is incredibly close-knit, to which they attribute their many game wins all over Orange County. Runyan maintains that baseball is so much more than just a game. It creates friendships, memories, and a reason to bring amazing individuals together to create magic.
Last season, the Seahawks finished second in the Golden West League, with a 9:1 record. This year, they’re inviting the community to come out and see their magical journey continue. Landon plans on working together with the team, Head Coach Tanner VanMaanen, and the rest of their incredible coaching staff to accomplish his goal of winning CIF this spring.
