VCU women’s lacrosse sweeps A-10 weekly honors

RICHMOND, Va. (BVM) — With two recent wins over fellow Atlantic 10 Conference members, the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s lacrosse team has built some strong momentum in conference play. The Rams won a pair of A-10 matchups during the week of March 28 with a 22-12 victory over George Mason on April 1 before winning 11-7 against George Washington on April 3. Thanks to its two strong performances, three members of the team were recognized by the A-10 for their contributions to the wins.

Sophomore Juliana George, senior Gillian Belfiore and freshman Kelsey McDonnell each earned an A-10 weekly honor for their performances, securing a program sweep of the weekly awards.

George was recognized as the conference’s player of the week after she scored five goals and gave seven assists in the Rams two wins. This is the second time this season that George has earned the conference’s player of the week honor.

Belfiore was a force from her goalie position throughout the week, helping her secure the A-10 defensive player of the week nod. The goalie made an impressive 14 saves in the win over George Washington, including allowing just one goal in the first half for a new school record.

McDonnel is also a returner to the weekly awards podium. The freshman earned her second A-10 rookie of the week honors after recording a hat trick in the win against George Mason along with three draw controls and also recorded a ground ball in the win over George Washington.

With a 2-1 conference record so far this season, their lone loss coming to No. 18 Richmond on March 28, the Rams are in control of their conference destiny. The Rams will prepare for another A-10 matchup against Davidson on April 9, which can go a long way to establish VCU as a legitimate conference contender. As long as the team continues to receive standout performances from its players, VCU should be in good hands for the remainder of the season.
