Oregon High School girls cross country to compete in state meet

OREGON, Wis. (BVM) — On May 1, Oregon High School girls cross country punched its ticket to the WIAA alternate fall season state meet by winning the Stoughton sectional meet.

The Panthers dominated the meet with five runners finishing in the top10 and their other two finishing in the top20. Sophomore Dasha Vorontsov took first place overall. In all, Oregon scored 31 points, blowing away the competition and beating second-place New Glarus Monticello by 61 points.

The young team does feature two seniors in Clara Hughes and Julia Hutchinson but has a lot of young talent as well including Vorontsov, sophomore Libby Beirne and freshman Mari Ceaca-Villa.

Now the Panthers will compete in the state meet Saturday at Blackhawk Golf Course in Janesville, Wis. and hope to carry the momentum they gained from sectionals.

It will be the second time Vorontsov will compete at the state meet after qualifying last year and it is the first time Oregon has qualified as a team since 2012.
