Saginaw Valley State duo named GLIAC field athletes of the year
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (BVM) — The Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) track and field teams have had strong outdoor seasons this spring, and it is in large part due to two of their athletes.
On the women’s side, Cheyenne Williamson has been a star, and was recently named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. It’s the first time winning the honor for the sophomore, who showed high-level potential early in the season with a 5,517-point score in the heptathlon at the Duke University Tobacco Road Challenge.
Williamson would go on to win 18 events over the course of the season, and was victorious in each long jump and high jump competition that she competed in. At the GLIAC championship meet, the Garber High School product won four individual titles, and won all five meet awards.
The track standout will be competing in the NCAA DII Outdoor National Championships at Grand Valley State University next week. Joining her will be fellow Cardinal Sam Black, who won the GLIAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award on the men’s side.
Black has had a tremendous season as well, and is ranked at the No. 1 decathlon athlete in all of Division II. Black broke out in his junior indoor track season, setting personal bests in the long jump, high jump, shot put, pole vault and heptathlon.
Back on the track this spring, the senior recently set a school record with a 7,807-point score in the decathlon at the Mount Olive First Chance and Multi meet. Black will join Williamson in next week’s NCAA championships, where he is provisionally qualified for the 110-meter hurdles and high jump in addition to the decathlon.
