De La Salle alum Nathan Iacona achieves college All-American honors in track and field

WARREN, Mich. — To say it’s been quite a year for Nathan Iacona of Shelby Township would be an understatement. After achieving All State Honors in Track and Field at De La Salle Collegiate High School in 2022, Nathan has now achieved collegiate All American honors in the 400 meter dash in 2023 at Aquinas College as only a Freshman. Nathan advanced to the NAIA Men’s Indoor National Championships on March 2-4 at Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on the campus of South Dakota State University, and at the National Championships, ran the 2nd fastest time in the Nation of 47.69 in the 400 meter dash, being named an All American and also breaking Aquinas’ 20-year old school record in that event. It was quite a weekend for Iacona, as the Freshman went on to run in the 400 meter National Finals and placed 5th with a time of 47.82, while also running with his Aquinas teammates in the men’s 4×400 meter relay at the National Championships and also breaking the Aquinas 10-year old school record in the 4×400 meter relay as well.

Nathan is an athletic sprinter in several events, having been a 4-time State of Michigan qualifier for the State Championships in high school at De La Salle, in the 400 meter dash, the 4×200 meter relay, the 4×400 meter relay and the 4×800 meter relay. He was a 3-time Macomb County gold medalist as a Senior in 2022. At Aquinas, Nathan runs the 400 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, the 4×100 meter relay and the 4×400 meter relay. Nathan hopes to achieve All American honors in those events as well, individually and with his teammates, during his career at Aquinas College, and with the impressive start to his career that Nathan has had in his Freshman year at Aquinas, he hopes to continue his quest toward being the National Champion in the 400 meter dash.

Nathan is coached at Aquinas College by Associate Head Coach and Sprints Coach Kevin Winne, and was coached in high school at De La Salle by Dominic Reid. Coach Reid said this of his former team captain: “Nathan is a leader and a great teammate. It is a pleasure to have been his coach. He works extremely hard every day and does whatever is asked of him to help the team. His determination to be great is what drives him daily. Aquinas is getting not only a great runner, but also a great student and even a better young man. If it wasn’t for the year and a half lost to Covid at the high school level, there is no telling how great Nathan might have been while at De La Salle.” Coach Winne from Aquinas added: “We are excited to have Nathan as part of our Sprints group here at Aquinas. We knew when we recruited him that he had the talent to make an immediate impact.”

Nathan is a Dean’s List student at Aquinas College, achieving a 3.7 GPA during his Freshman year on campus, and Nathan is double-majoring at Aquinas College in Business Administration and Sports Management.
