Marathon returns to Manitoba after a year break due to COVID-19

WINNIPEG, MB– Around 3,000 runners have registered to lace up once again across all categories, which is a small number of participants when compared to the previous years’ 10,000 to 12,000. The marathon venue, Fort Garry Campus, would expect approximately 20,000 spectators from nearby locations.

Rachel Munday, executive director of the marathon, said: “It’s almost surreal. It took two long years to actually happen.”

The first of the five waves will start at 8 a.m., followed by others to keep proper distancing of participants. Only a limited number of staff and volunteers are permitted to gather at the start, and the finish lines as the event should strictly follow COVID-19 protocol.

Leanne Taylor, the former marathoner, is also excited to participate in the para-triathlon, a triathlon variant for the participants with physical disabilities using a combination of handcycle and racing wheelchair after her back broke in a cycling crash in 2018. Although she competes on marathons, her goal is to qualify preliminary round for the coming Paris Paralympics in 2024.
