Spencer County athletes qualify for nationals after Kentucky 4-H state shooting competition

TAYLORSVILLE, Ky. — Earlier this month, 17 Spencer Co 4-H shooting sports youth participated in the 2021 Kentucky State tournament. Out of the 17 participants, 13 of them won trophies. Of those 13, there were four State Champions. Leighanne Lyvers completed her 4-H experience with yet another Archery Recurve State Champion finish. This is her 3rd Archery Recurve State Championship. She also achieved a first-place tie by shooting a perfect score in division 1 Trap. The tie was broken by a shoot-off. Leighanne finished second to yet another Spencer Co 4-H’er, Connor Brooks, who also shot a perfect score of 50 out of 50 targets and went on to be yet another Spencer Co Shooting Sports Champion.

This was only Connors’s second year, and there seems to be a bright future for this young man. This year will be the first year UK 4-H will be taking a team to the Nationals in Nebraska next June. Only six participants were eligible to go to Nationals in this Division, and Spencer Co had three of the six, and feat no other County can say. Great job.

In the Archery Recurve 9-11 age group Kayla Klaus became Spencer Counties’ youngest State Champion, and she not only won in one discipline, but she was able to finish 1st in two disciplines, Archery Recurve and Target Recurve. Finishing 7th was Gavin Flechler, with Bella Powell coming in 8th. The trio also participated in Archery Barebow division.

The 12-14 age group, Mia Sims, Stephanie Knight, Ava Klaus and Collin Vincent, took home a third-place trophy in Archery Target Recurve division, with Mia finishing 3rd overall, Collin 4th, Ava 5th, and Stephanie 6th.

Mia Sims, Collin Vincent and Ava Klaus also competed in Archery Recurve division, with Mia finishing 3rd overall.

Trophies don’t determine if your club is successful or not, they are just icing on the cake, but it’s the things that youth learn through our 4- H program and how they grow to become successful people in our community and our country.
