Quinnipiac’s own Savion Lewis is ready to bounce back
HAMDEN, Conn. (BVM) — Since the age of four, Quinnipiac men’s basketball player, Savion Lewis, has been battling away in the sport of basketball.
Now, he finds himself as one of the key contributors to the Quinnipiac men’s basketball team.
“At a young age, my father always had me dribbling the ball, trying to shoot the ball and trying to figure out which hand I should shoot with,” Lewis said. “My dad put the basketball in my hands and showed me everything, so he had a big influence on why I play today.”
Lewis, now 22, grew up in Dix Hills, Long Island. Lewis really started to take his game to the next level and make a name for himself as a basketball star at East Half Hollow Hills High School.
At East Half Hollow Hills, Savion was named New York’s Mr. Basketball in 2018. He shattered multiple records at East Half Hollow Hills High School, including being named East Half Hollow Hills Basketball Player of the year in 2018. Lewis still currently holds the records for most points, assists and steals in school history.
Savion also led the Thunderbirds to the state championship game, but they’d fall just one point short. But, despite losing the state championship, growing up in New York at such a young age and dominating on the hardwood would help translate to the college level.
Lewis committed to Quinnipiac University in 2018 on a full scholarship. In his first year at Quinnipiac in 2018-19, Lewis took a redshirt season as a freshman.
As a redshirt freshman in 2019-20, Lewis was off to a decent start before breaking his foot eight games into the season. In those eight games that he played in, Lewis averaged 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
With a new year and no injury, Lewis made a much larger impact in his sophomore season after cracking his way into the starting lineup. He started 20 of the 22 games in the 2020-21 season for the Bobcats. As a result of being in the starting lineup, his numbers skyrocketed.
Two key factors to why Lewis emerged immensely in his sophomore campaign were being inserted into the starting lineup and staying durable throughout the 2020-21 season. He followed that success into his junior season, where he averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists in eight games played for the Bobcats.
Just as Lewis was starting to take off and hit his stride in his junior year, he suffered an Achilles injury eight games into the new season. Injuries are no stranger for Lewis, as he’s suffered a multitude of injuries throughout his young career. With that said, Lewis described the Achilles injury that he suffered to be the worst possible injury he’s endured in his career.
“The torn Achilles that I suffered this season was by far the worst injury I’ve ever suffered in my career,” Lewis said. “When the injury happened, it was definitely devastating. My emotions were definitely triggered and I didn’t know how to feel, but I had great energy, great teammates and a great family that motivated me to get past this injury.”
After this tragic Achilles injury stripped him of a full junior season, Lewis is more motivated than ever to get fully healthy. And once he;s back on the court with his teammates, he’ll aim to dominate once again.
