Notable Centerville softball players returning for another great season

CENTERVILLE, Ohio — Although he’s not a science teacher, Wendell Hutchinson knows a little something about chemistry. Currently in his third year as head coach of the Centerville High School (CHS) varsity softball program, Wendell is a seasoned pro at creating the team chemistry that produces champions.

“Don’t let Wendell be humble,” said Todd Hopf, father of sophomore catcher Ardyn Hopf. “He is one of the premier coaches in the country. Many of the girls he has coached have gone on to play in college—most recently Emma Schutter, who graduated last year and is a starter for University of Dayton.”

Todd’s opinion is to be trusted, as his two older daughters went on to play college softball.

“Wendell is a nationally known coach,” Todd went on. “One of his teams won the Junior Olympic Gold Cup last summer, and he has a number of girls on nationally ranked teams.”

The girls are just beginning their season, which culminates in early June’s Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) state tournament. As part of the Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC), they participate in several events against some of Ohio’s top teams, including Friday Night Lights at Lebanon High School and the Wendy’s Spring Classic in Ashland.

Excitement is high this year. “Our numbers are up this season, and the players believe we can win and make a deep run in the playoffs,” said Wendell. “They have great team chemistry.”

Notable returning team members include those selected for last season’s GWOC All-Conference Team, like captains Ashley Arnold (junior pitcher, All-Conference Second Team) and Anna Kauffman (senior infielder, All-Conference Special Mention). Sophomore pitcher Hayley Arnold received All-Conference Special Mention. Senior Natalie Frazier is formidable at third base. Sophomore Ardyn Hopf was All-Conference First Team catcher, and junior Brooke Strobel was All-Conference First Team outfielder.

Adding to the team’s enthusiasm is a major renovation to the dugouts and backstop area, completed last year. The infield is slated for resurfacing this year, and future plans include elevated seating (for a stadium feel) and a press box.

“I love coaching at Centerville,” said Wendell. “These are great kids who work hard together. We do our best to put them in a position to win, and they want to win. Getting to the state finals is their dream; I’m here to help them fulfill it.”

Anna Kauffman (senior middle infield/pitcher): Softball has allowed me to break out of my shell and helped improve my confidence level, as well as leadership skills. Softball has also allowed me to form friendships with some of the most amazing people that I know will last a lifetime.

During my freshman year, the team took a trip down to Gulf Shores, Alabama, to play in a tournament. I also remember when our catcher, Ardyn Hopf, hit a grand slam with myself, Natalie Frazier and Emma Schutter on base, to put us up against Troy in the top of the seventh, in our first tournament game last season.

Mallory Carr (senior first base): Softball has taught me that I can do a lot more than I think I can, if I put my mind to something. It has also surrounded me with my best friends, who bring out the best in me.

Last year’s trip to the Wendy’s Classic in Ashland is one of my favorite memories. We had a little talent show one night, and all my teammates and coaches did funny things or skits. I’ve never laughed that hard!

Natalie Frazier (senior third base): Softball has definitely made me a more outgoing person. Wendell creates a great connection with his players, and that will leave a lasting impact on me.
