May brings warmer water and great fishing

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There’s just something about summertime fishing that I love.

The schools of mullet and ladyfish make their presence in the surf. You can see them early in the morning exploding from the water.  You can see birds diving down to get them and predators attacking them from below.  It is really a sight to see. Jack Crevel, redfish, pompano, ladyfish, spanish mackerel, kingfish, bull sharks, and an occasional hammerhead shark here and there can be caught. They should start coming in around this time. In about another month the tiger sharks will come closer to shore. For Jack Crevalle a live mullet or silver spoon is the key. But in a feeding frenzy you can basically throw anything at them and they will bite it.

Early in the morning as the sun is coming up you can see plenty of redfish tailing in the first gut. If you spot a school, cast out crab Fishbites into the mix. The reason I say crab or crab Fishbites is because there is usually lots of blue crabs in the surf around May so it’s best to match the hatch.  That will most likely be what they are feeding on.  They are bottom feeders so I always use a weight on the bottom of a 3 to 4 foot leader when targeting them. Try casting for them in shallow waters between the wade gut and the first gut.

To catch Pompano cast long with a double drop leader using shrimp, and shrimp or flea Fishbites.  You may see lots of baby Pompano in the wade gut.  If you happen to accidentally catch them in your casting net while targeting bait fish, you have to release them. As it is illegal to keep a Pompano caught from a net.

Kingfish can be caught at the end of the jetty using a wire liter and a large lure or spoon.

For Spanish mackerel go on a really good day when the water is blue close to the shoreline. Cast live mullet into the wade gut with no weight and hook into some huge Spanish mackerel.  They will also take silver spoons.  Hold on tight be cause they are very tough fighters, fun to catch and can bite through your leader in a heartbeat.

If you’re planning a camping trip make sure to take lots of bug spray and sunblock. There’s no wind and the mosquitoes can swarm you like crazy.  I hope to see you on the sand with tight lines.
