Houston Academy softball wins Class 3A state championship

DOTHAN, Ala. — The Houston Academy Raiders captured their first-ever state championship softball title on May 18 in Oxford, Alabama. The Raiders defeated Mobile Christian School 5-3 to win the championship. They also beat them the day before by a score of 4-1 to advance to the final game.

Head Coach Sharon Cherry said, “If I had one word to describe this team, it is grit. They just fight it out until they get the job done.”

The Raiders scored all five runs in the second inning of the championship game. That was all they needed. They finished the season with a 48-13-1 record. Senior Alex Milanowski led the team offensively during the season with a .450 batting average, 76 RBI’s and 14 home runs. Mary Suzan Aman had 76 hits and 38 stolen bases for the year. Ansleigh Smith led defensively with a .978 fielding percentage. The team had only two seniors during this season so the 2022-23 team should be competitive again next year.
