Rio Rico wrestler Sophia Renteria proves hard work pays off

RIO RICO, Ariz. — Part of the wrestling program at Rio Rico High school is senior Sophia Renteria who has been wrestling for 5 years. Sophia’s hard work has begun to pay off. She placed in the top six at the Flowing Wells Invitational, fourth at the women’s sectional, and third at multiple freestyle tournaments in the men’s division.

“A struggle I face every year is being the only experienced girl on the team. Although I have amazing male teammates to practice with, it’s not the same as wrestling other experienced girls. I love that in wrestling you compete individually but are still a part of a team. As a sport, it constantly pushes you to become a better athlete and person. I wouldn’t love the sport as much as I do without my coaches, they’ve always supported me.”
