Horace Mann 7th grader Nora Hastings stays focused on serving and teamwork

WAUSAU, Wis. — Nora Hastings, 12, has quickly developed a passion for volleyball. The Horace Mann Middle School seventh-grader has been playing for two years and competes for the Horace Mann Eagles.

“My personal goal is to play college volleyball,” said Nora.

For Nora, serving consistently is one of her biggest challenges on the court.

“I try not to psych myself out when I’m about to serve,” said Nora. “I take a deep breath and focus on the ball. I’m practicing to master my overhand serve.”

Volleyball has also taught Nora the importance of communication.

“The best advice I’ve been given is to communicate with my teammates,” she said. “In volleyball, you really have to talk to each other to make sure mistakes aren’t made.”

Despite the challenges, Nora’s love for the sport shines through.

“I love everything about volleyball!” said Nora.

Pregame rituals are a part of many athletes’ routines, and Nora has a unique one she shares with a teammate. “Before every game, we do a special handshake,” she said.

Being a member of a team has helped Nora grow both on and off the court.

“It has taught me the importance of working together,” said Nora. “It doesn’t matter if you can’t pass or set or hit—you have to talk to each other. Communicating is the key to a great win.”

Nora has also learned to trust her teammates more. She recalled a moment where miscommunication cost her team a point.

“I went for a ball that really should have gone to the teammate behind me,” said Nora. “Because of that, we both missed the ball and lost the point. That’s when I realized we need to communicate better as a team, and I need to trust my teammates more.”

Outside of volleyball, Nora leads a well-rounded life. She plays piano and flute, is part of the track team in the spring and performs in CWETA productions.

“I also love hanging out with my friends,” said Nora.

To Nora, volleyball is more than just a game—it’s an opportunity to improve, grow, and enjoy the journey.

“The best advice I’ve received from a coach is to have fun,” said Nora. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Nora is proud of her accomplishments and feels honored to be recognized.

“I feel really proud to be chosen as an athlete of the month,” she said.
