The MVPs of recovery: Centerville athletic trainer Karl Knutsson

DAYTON, Ohio — Behind every powerhouse team resides an often invisible group of athletic trainers (ATs). These dedicated men and women employ cutting-edge knowledge and techniques, to keep athletes at the top of their game.

This month South CW Neighbors introduces Part 1 of a three-part series showcasing the talents of the Centerville High School athletic trainers. First in the lineup: Karl Knutsson. “It is always a good feeling when an athlete you have been working with for weeks or months is able to return to their sport and start playing again!” Karl said.

Degrees/certifications: MS, ATC

Years in position: 6

Sports concentrations: Girls’ volleyball, cross country, tennis, wrestling, baseball and softball

Education/Training

  • Master’s degree
  • National board certification
  • Ohio state license (which involves passing a test)
  • CPR certification (with many ATs choosing to become CPR instructors)

Duties

  • Injury recovery and rehabilitation
  • Documentation/administrative duties (making sure all athletes have paperwork turned in, keeping coaches up to date on athletes’ recovery statuses, etc.)
  • Some preventive care
  • Lunch/school day treatments
  • Maintaining presence at all games/events, as well as most practices

Keeping the Rotation Fresh

“I love how much variety there is in our day-to-day operations. You never know who’s going to walk through the door and talk to you, or if you’re going to see a unique injury throughout the day.”

“There are ATs working in almost every sector, from high school to professional sports, from industrial workplaces to the military.”
