Cornell Powell’s ongoing journey from J.H. Rose High School
GREENVILLE, N.C. (BVM) – In 2016, J.H. Rose High School was home to one of the top prep receivers in the entire country.
Cornell Powell, a Greenville native, exploded as a senior with 65 receptions, 1,557 yards and 38 total touchdowns.
When it came down to decision time for the 6-foot, 200 pound playmaker, Powell chose to attend Clemson University.
With the Tiger football program emerging as one of the nation’s best, Powell was primarily used for special teams for four seasons.
In those four seasons, Clemson took home two national championships.
Powell was able to take a redshirt year in 2018, allowing him to come back as a fifth-year senior in 2020.
He finally got his first chance as a starter and excelled.
Powell finished out his final season with 53 catches, 882 yards and seven touchdowns. This was enough to put him on the radar of pro scouts, emerging as a NFL draft prospect.
He was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, but was placed on the practice squad before the start of the season and has remained there since.
Powell is still just 24 years old and while he would likely want to be on the 53-man roster, it is still impressive to remain on the practice squad of arguably the most talented roster in the NFL.
Week after week, teams attempt to grab talent from the top practice squads across the league, and Powell could easily be the next one plucked.
Whether it is for the Chiefs or another NFL squad, hopefully the JH Rose alum will get a chance to play every Sunday in the near future.
