Coach Bryce Meyers turns Millard South Patriots into a winner

OMAHA, Neb. (BVM) — Bryce Meyers has been very successful in his time as the head coach of Millard South High School girls basketball team, leading the Patriots to many victories, including state championships and state playoffs.

Millard South has made it to the state playoffs each of the past five years, with two of those teams advancing to the state championship game, but the Patriots came up short in both state final games.

“The adversity we’ve had to face these past couple years have been unfortunate,” Meyers said. “Making it to back to back championships just to be runner-ups play a bad toll on you. But those losses make you that much more hungry for the next season.”

The Patriots have also had to overcome some obstacles. They were a young team with only one senior during the 2018-19 season, but that didn’t stop them from reaching the championship.

Meyers began coaching for Millard South in 2013 and in two seasons turned the program into a winner. In just three seasons he led Millard South to its first state tournament appearance since 1999. The winning culture Meyers brought to Millard South changed the program for the better.

Meyers emphasizes the value of practices, which he’s used to help prepare his teams for battle.

“Our practices simulate what the games are going to be like and we have to feel as though we’re really ready for our opponent,” Meyers said.

The saying “practice makes perfect” really applies to Meyers and his coaching techniques at Millard South. A lot of coaches value practice, but it truly matters to Meyers how hard the players practice and how determined they are. He also believes the value of teamwork in the game of basketball goes hand and hand with life. The more you can put trust and can rely on others, the easier and the smoother it makes things go. Meyers also pushes team bonding and encourages his players to spend time with each other to improve their relationships.

Meyers’ coaching techniques have already led the Patriots to many successes which he’ll look to add to as his career continues.
