Sandpoint Legacy Wrestling Club wraps up fall season
SANDPOINT, Idaho — The North Idaho Wrestling League (NIWL) teams started practicing in September and the first tournament was held in Bonners Ferry on October 20. Sandpoint Legacy Wrestling Club had eight wrestlers on tournament mats for the first time and a couple others returning after a year or more away. The strong veteran group in the Novice and Middle School divisions had almost everyone making it to the finals in their weight class. Even though many kids were still doing fall school sports so they didn’t go to the tournament, Legacy had the highest winning percentage of all the teams at 65% with 75 wins and 41 losses.

Legacy was four team points away from taking first place in the small team division, second to St. Maries, 43-40 and tied with Lakeland for third place overall. Besides the battle going on for the team trophy, Legacy wrestlers were battling for the chance to bring home their own first-place trophy. In addition to a fun little group of Pre-Bantams, collecting hard-earned ribbons, they had 45 wrestlers spread throughout the rest of the age divisions, with 33 making the finals and 26 earning a spot on the podium.
Those super cool 1st place trophies went to: Bantams Wolf Bagnell (49lbs), Beau Bradshaw (62lbs) and Braxley Hatfield (45lbs); Intermediate Tristan Porter (67lbs); Novices Jacob Neff (92lbs) and Maxx Watson (86lbs); and Middle Schooler Zak Wood (87lbs). The North Idaho Panhandle Championships took place on Saturday November 12, at the Courts at Real Life in Post Falls. With over 650 registered wrestlers it was a big day of wrestling; unfortunately, Legacy numbers were a little down due to several kids out sick and a couple still out due to injury. The championship format gave the bracketed Pre-Bantams a chance to win a medal and in the older age divisions some weight classes had 16-man brackets, so kids wrestled through extra rounds to earn a spot in the top six. Amid an exciting day of wrestling, Legacy had a sobering moment late in the tournament when teammate Beau Cates had to be wheeled from the mat on a stretcher due to a broken collar bone.
After eight and half hours of wrestling, Jason Symons wrestled the last match of the night for his 4th place finish in the Middle School 92lbs class – bringing the team’s medal count to 30. Usually, the Panhandle Championship caps off the league’s fall schedule but there is still one more chance to hit the mats at the Lake City NIWL tournament or the regional Bigfoot Tournament in Spokane on November 19 before officially wrapping up the fall season.
