Badgers one win from Big Ten Tournament title

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (BVM) — The University of Wisconsin women’s soccer team will face off against Iowa on Sunday in the Big Ten Tournament championship.

On Thursday, Iowa beat No. 4 Penn St. 1-0 to advance to the title game while the Badgers came back from being down 1-0 after the first half to beat Rutgers 2-1.

The Scarlet Knights were the first to get the ball in the back of the net with Mneka Moneme scoring in the 23rd minute of the match. Neither team would score again in the first half but when play resumed for the final 45 minutes, it was Wisconsin that took over.

Senior Lauren Rice chose a perfect time to have her first goal of the season, tying the game for the Badgers with a goal in the 62nd minute. Both teams would trade missed chances to take the lead and as time continued to tick away it looked as though the game would have to be decided in overtime.

Then in the 85th minute, Maia Cell found Emma Jaskaniec in the box and after a setup touch buried the ball in the upper-right-hand corner of the goal. The Badgers would hold onto the lead for the remaining of the game.

Big Ten Goalkeeper of the year,  Jordyn Bloomer, had four saves in Wisconsin’s semifinal win.

The Badgers’ matchup against Iowa is a rematch of the 2014 Big Ten Tournament championship game in which Wisconsin won and they’ll try to repeat history on Sunday.
