Thomas Dale football season ends in 6A regional championship

CHESTER, Va. (BVM) — It was a strong season for Thomas Dale High School football, even if it didn’t end the way the team had hoped. The Knights lost their final matchup of the season, 49-3 to Oscar Smith High School in the Virginia High School League Region 6A Championship.

While the final game may put a damper on the season as a whole, the accomplishments of the Thomas Dale team cannot be understated. Despite being led most of the season by a freshman starting quarterback in Ethan Minter, who is certainly no slouch with Division I offers already, the Knights were able to make it into the championship game with a perfect 6-0 record with a number of impressive wins including a 41-31 win over Franklin County in the region’s first round.

The championship game set up a battle of the unbeatens with Oscar Smith also coming into the game 6-0 and was also billed as a rematch of the 2019 regional championship, a victory for Oscar Smith. Although history would end up repeating itself, making the championship should be seen as a victory in its own right for a young and talented Thomas Dale team.

With plenty of youth left on the roster, including Minter who recently picked up his second Division I Power 5 offer, the Knights could be a threat in Region 6A for years to come. Though the sting of its first loss may sting now, it may just signify a much brighter future for Thomas Dale.
