UNM signee Luke Wysong wins second Gatorade award

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (BVM) — Two months after being named the Gatorade New Mexico Football Player of the Year, Luke Wysong earned his second Gatorade award in another sport.

The 2021 Cleveland High School grad was officially awarded as the state’s top athlete in boys track and field on July 8 after leading the Storm to the Class 5A state team title this past spring. Wysong set personal records in four individual events and helped the Storm’s 400-meter relay team set a state record. The soon-to-be University of New Mexico freshman won the 100 and 200-meter dashes and placed second in the long jump as well as the 400, which he lost by a narrow margin of 0.02 seconds. He ran the second leg of Cleveland’s 400 relay foursome which finished in a 5A record time of 41.88 seconds.

“Luke is, without question, a talented athlete and possesses a great deal of physical ability, but his work ethic and willingness to prepare is second to none,” Cleveland High School head coach Kenny Henry said in a Gatorade press release. “I have been around many great athletes, but Luke Wysong is the greatest competitor there is.”

Wysong was a star wide receiver/defensive back for the Cleveland football program, helping the Storm win the 2019 state title and all four of their games played during an abbreviated 2021 spring season. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound two-sport star caught 15 passes for 429 yards and six touchdowns as a senior and finished his prep career with 1,173 receiving yards and 14 total TDS. Wysong signed his national letter of intent with UNM football last December but he hopes to also compete in track and field for the Lobos.
