BVM Sports Friday night five: Third round of the WIAA playoffs
Only one more game before the state tournament. With sectional championships this week, here is a look back at who were the top performers last Friday night.
5. WR Drew Wagner, sophomore, Kettle Moraine HS
In one of the bigger upsets from last week, No. 6-seeded Kettle Moraine went to Union Grove and beat the No. 1 seed, 21-14. This win came after another thrilling upset for the Lasers who beat No. 2-seeded Badger 13-7 in overtime. In their win on Friday, Drew Wagner came up with one of the biggest plays of the game when he scored a touchdown on a 60-yard reception with about seven minutes left in the game. The score put Kettle Moraine up 21-7 and put the game out of reach for Union Grove. Wagner finished with five receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown. The Lasers will now play against Homestead for a chance to make it to state for the first time since 1988, which was also the last time they won a state championship.
4. RB Joseph Ollman, senior, Homestead HS
Homestead is once again playing for a chance to get to the state tournament this week after beating Wauwatosa West 28-7 last Friday night. The Highlanders did most of their work through the run game with senior running back Joseph Ollman accounting for three of the team’s four touchdowns. Ollman also led all rushers in the game with 217 yards on the ground on 29 attempts. Homestead now faces Kettle Moraine in the sectional championship.
3. LB Tom Koffman, junior, Saint Mary’s Springs Academy
Kenosha St. Joseph was the first to score in the sectional semifinal game against Saint Mary’s Springs Academy last Friday, but that was also the last time they would do so. The Ledgers scored 29 unanswered points after Kenosha scored to win 29-6. The defense was lights out after that first touchdown and Tom Koffman was a huge part of that dominance. The junior linebacker had four sacks and a forced fumble that wasn’t recovered by the Ledgers. Saint Mary’s Springs will now play Darlington on Friday.
2. WR Quinn Miskowski, senior, Aquinas HS
Aquinas has been dominant all postseason and last Friday’s game against Saint Croix Falls was no different. The No. 1-seeded Blugolds beat Saint Croix 38-14 at home, and they did it on the ground and through the air. Through the air, most of the damage was done by Quinn Miskowski. The senior wide receiver had four receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns, including a 74-yard touchdown reception. Aquinas will now play Wittenberg-Birnamwood in the sectional championship.
1. QB Myles Burkett, senior, Franklin HS
One of the best quarterbacks in the state continued to show why he will be heading to Madison next year to play for the Badgers. Myles Burkett went 16 of 19 for 353 yards and three touchdowns against Bay Port on Friday night. Franklin won 35-7 and kept its undefeated season going. The game also gave Burkett 2,795 passing yards on the season as well as 31 touchdowns and only two interceptions. The Sabres will now play Appleton North for a chance to head to the state tournament.
