Jeff Jenkins and Kevin Basinger have a historical past together at Bellbrook
BELLBROOK, Ohio — The Bellbrook Golden Eagles have a familiar face on their sidelines heading into their regional semifinal matchup with Tippecanoe. Former head coach Kevin Basinger has joined forces with current head coach Jeff Jenkins. After spending 19 years as the head coach at Bellbrook, Basinger is now the quarterback coach for Jenkins.
As the head coach, Kevin Basinger tallied 119 wins and led the Golden Eagles to six playoff appearances. The former Golden Eagles head coach has registered a 151-87 record between Bellbrook and Greeneview. When asked about how it felt not to be the head coach, Kevin Basinger had this to say to reporters.
“The first year I got out of it, I had the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders,” he said. “When you’re the head coach, it’s 365 all the time. It’s tough.”
Coach Basinger also explained how it felt coming back as an assistant to Jeff Jenkins.
“Even up until the first practice last year, I was kind of unsure about how I’d fit in and how it would work,” he said. “The kids and coaches all did a great job of making me feel welcome. It’s been really cool to get to go back again.”
The 2021-22 Bellbrook Golden Eagles have the potential to bring home hardware this season. Bellbrook’s football program has made ten appearances in the OHSAA football playoffs and has an overall record of 7-10. The Golden Eagles have yet to make it past the regional finals in the playoffs.
Bellbrook has two games standing in the way of a final four appearance. On Friday night, the Golden Eagles will meet the Tippecanoe Red Devils in the regional semifinals.
If Bellbrook can defeat Tippecanoe for the second time this season, they’ll head to the regional finals to meet the Badin Rams or the Memorial Roughriders.
Jenkins and Basinger have the potential to make history if they can win the next two games. The two coaches have been a part of Bellbrook’s football program for 25 years. Jenkins was a member of Basinger’s 1999 Bellbrook football team that went 10-0 and made a playoff appearance.
There’s a ton of history between Jenkins and Basinger. Bringing a state championship back to the Bellbrook community would be a tremendous accomplishment for both Jenkins and Basinger. That state championship would engrave their names in the Bellbrook record book for the rest of their lives.
