Eastlake Wolves’ perfect season ends in heartbreak

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The Eastlake High School Wolves varsity football team had an incredible season. They were one of the most dominant teams in their state and proved it week after week, dominating anyone that stood in their way. Unfortunately, come the end of the season the fairy tale did not have a happy ending as the Wolves would fall just short of perfection.

The Wolves started their season with non-district play. They would open up with a dominant win over Kentwood High School 53-0. The Wolves next non-district game would be against Rainer Breach High School. This game would be much closer, but the Wolves would emerge victorious 17-16. The final non-district game for the Wolves came against Kentridge High School, where the Wolves would get back to dominant ways winning the game 56-7. The Wolves would now prepare to enter district play at a perfect 3-0.

The first district game of the season for the Wolves would prove to be another difficult test. Much like the other difficult game they faced off in earlier in the season, it was the Wolves defense that would step up when the offense was lacking. They would go on to win the game 17-7. The next two district games would prove to be fairly simple for the Wolves as the defeated Redmond High School 48-8 and Skyline High School 41-7.

The next district game would once again prove to be difficult for the Wolves as they took on Mount Si High School. The Wolves would narrowly win this game 27-20, improving their record to 8-0. The defense would continue to flex their muscles in the Wolves’ final two district games, allowing three total points in the final two games as the Wolves would win both, defeating Issaquah and Bothell High School. The Wolves would close out their regular season with one more non-district win over Curtis High School, giving them a perfect 10-0 record and a spot in the playoffs.

The first playoff game for the Wolves would be one of their easiest games of the season as they took on Eastmont High School at home. The Wolves would dominate in every aspect of this game and win 50-0. Their second-round playoff matchup would see them win a closer yet very comfortable game over Sumner High School 46-29. The next playoff game is where the heartbreak would happen for the Wolves. After an incredible 12-0 season, all the great things would come to a crashing end. The terrific defense that had been so solid all year seemed to collapse as the Wolves would lose to Lake Stevens High School 45-28.

This would mark the end of what was an incredible season for Eastlake, leaving fans and players with a bitter taste in their mouth as they think of what could have been. The Wolves have laid groundwork for what could be a state champion team, however, as this season shows, there is still work to be done. Next season will be a revenge tour of sorts for the Wolves as they look to take that next step from greatness to perfection.
