Weston defeats Maimonides, 10-3, as Nicholas Cross gives stellar performance

WESTON, Mass. — Nicholas Cross had a fantastic night on the mound, throwing the best he has all season long. According to Cross, “The first few innings were a grind.” Cross let a few baserunners get on and had to work around runners in scoring position in the first and third innings. Cross did a nice job of this, limiting Maimonides to only a couple of runs. The hallmark of Cross’ pitching performance is the fact that he throws strikes and a lot of them. Cross threw seven strikeouts to go along with his seven IPs and 1 ER for the night.

Although Weston was scoreless through the first four innings, the game opened up for Weston in the bottom of the fifth inning as Blake Theriaque, Sam Meservi and Gabe Johnson loaded up the bases as Cross came up to bat. Cross hit a double and knocked in all three runs for Weston. Anthony Jorajuria followed Cross with a double of his own and drove in Cross, giving Weston a 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless top of the sixth inning, Benoit Schiermeier led off with a triple and then scored on a passed ball. The Wildcats went on to score five more runs in the inning to go into the top of the seventh inning up 10-3.

Cross then threw a second consecutive scoreless inning to give Weston their second victory in a row.

Senior captain Gabe Johnson also was a big part of the Wildcat victory on the night. Besides calling a great game behind the plate for Cross, he kept his team in the game – constantly supporting the team and believing that Weston could come back and win. Both on the field and in the dugout, Johnson had a superb game.

This win was an important victory as the team looks for a late season surge to get them into the state tournament.

Up next, Weston travels to Cambridge Ringe and Latin to take on the Falcons.
